Abstract

The Corona poética dedicada al insigne pintor sevillano Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (Poetic Crown dedicated to the famous Sevillian painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo) was published in Seville in 1863. It contains celebratory poems by the best known poets of the time in Seville and serves as a reference point for observing the reinterpretation of the painter and his aesthetics during the years that lead from his romantic vision to Velázquez's replacement as Spain's best painter. The analysis of the context in which the tribute was conceived proves the interested use that political intentions applied to the concept of «Sevillian school» in painting and poetry, headed by Murillo («the painter of heaven») and Herrera (the divine)
